Inquiry into low carbon power infrastructure launched

A new inquiry into the future of the UK electricity infrastructure has been launched.
The Energy and Climate Change Committee said the power infrastructure in the country is ageing and “substantial” investment will be required to upgrade both the transmission and distribution networks.
It will investigate what changes are required to build a low carbon, flexible and “fair” network.
The committee stated: “As low carbon technologies and distributed energy play a greater role, the move towards a smarter, more localised and diverse system presents both challenges and opportunities.
“Ensuring this transition occurs in a cost-effective way while maintaining system security and stability is challenging and the government needs to ensure that policies allow proper planning, testing and investment to take place. It will require addressing all elements of the energy infrastructure, including those on the demand side of the meter, engaging with customers and addressing their needs.”
