Hospital energy management
Customer: A major London teaching hospital
Sector: Healthcare
Focus: Large-scale cleansing and consolidation of energy data
Benefits: Turning data into insight; for analysis, monitoring and targeting
The Challenge:
A major London hospital wanted to gain accurate data on its energy performance, in a user friendly format that would allow for analysis, monitoring and targeting. The large site comprises numerous free standing buildings, huge steam boilers, and a CHP (combined heat and power) unit.
Energy management had previously been a lower priority, with data not being looked after and no coherent energy reduction strategy. Energy efficiency initiatives had been ad hoc, with no real insight into their effectiveness.
Although the hospital had a very large amount of data going back to 1997, including meter readings, it was disorganised, inaccurate, and contained large gaps.
Concept Energy Solutions was asked to conduct a large-scale cleansing and consolidation of all of the disparate data sources into an easily manageable, accurate format.
Actions:
Concept collected the data in various formats and the Bureau Team carried out a full data purging exercise. Concept identified several anomalies; these were fed back to the client, providing opportunities for ‘quick win’ savings.
Concept converted the mass of incomplete and disparate data streams into a user-friendly database for future use in analysis, monitoring and targeting.
Outcomes:
The creation of an accurate, complete and easy to use database on energy performance has provided the hospital with an excellent foundation for energy management. This has already started with the reassurance of knowing that the performance of some significant energy project investments can be monitored accurately to ensure that actual savings match initial projections.
